Neoclassical art emerged in the 19th-century from a desire to escape the chaos of modern life—during a time of immense social change, it offered softness, stillness, and feminine serenity. Today, in an age of burnout, overstimulation, and hyper-productivity, we find ourselves in a similar place.
'Neoclassical Escapism in the Modern Age' draws a parallel between then and now—revealing how, even if differently, we find means to escape in art: we’ve become lovers of nostalgia, softness, and aesthetics. Of romanticizing life so it won’t feel as cahotic as it is.
